NYC Subway Vigil Mourns Jordan Neely, Homeless Man Killed by Marine
Confrontation on Train Platform Led to Fatal Chokehold
Indictment Expected Soon in Neely's Death
A former US Marine who choked Jordan Neely to death on a New York City subway car on 1 May has been released on bail, but an indictment is expected soon.
Neely, a 30-year-old homeless man, was killed after a confrontation with Nathaniel Rowland, a 30-year-old former Marine, on a Manhattan-bound A train at the Broadway-Lafayette Street station.
According to witnesses, Neely walked up to Rowland and punched him in the face. Rowland then put Neely in a chokehold. The incident was captured on video by another passenger.
Neely was pronounced dead at the scene. Rowland was arrested and charged with manslaughter and negligent homicide.
A vigil was held for Neely on Tuesday night at the Broadway-Lafayette Street station. Friends and family members gathered to mourn his loss and call for justice.
"He was a good person," said Neely's friend, Charmaine Tucker. "He didn't deserve to die like this."
Elected officials also attended the vigil, including Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer and City Council Member Keith Powers. They vowed to work to end violence against homeless people.
"We cannot stand by and let this happen," said Brewer. "We need to do more to protect our most vulnerable citizens."
